Ireland… 1776… (Peter) Bernard Scalé

“Ireland”… 1776… (Peter) Bernard Scalé (1739 – 1826)… 7.5″ x 5.5″ (19 cms x 14 cms) …original copper engraving by Ellis and Palmer with full original hand colour… from “An Hibernian Atlas or General Description of the Kingdom of Ireland” published in London on 1 February 1776 by Robert Sayer and John Bennett. The atlas contains maps of Ireland showing counties, baronies, cities and towns. Each county has its own map with a description on the facing page. The page for this map is enclosed in this packaging. Scalé was a surveyor and cartographer in Dublin until 1774 when he moved to London. His Irish output was very large. In addition to numerous estate, town, district and county maps, he charted the coast from Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, to Wicklow Head in 1765 (with William Richards) and produced a new edition of Rocque’s map of Dublin in 1773. This map has been mounted to museum standards. Map Ref: 1076
